Just like women, men want flawless healthy skin full of vitality. But there are many differences between male skin and female skin. This is why men’s skin requires very specific care. Discover how men’s skin differs from that of women and all our tips for caring for it.
Man’s skin: its characteristics
As you may know, testosterone is the main hormone that determines the characteristics of a man’s skin.
Thicker skin
Men’s skin is on average 20% thicker than that of women. It is richer in collagen fibers which allows it to be more supple, firmer and more resilient than the skin of a woman.
Oily skin
Testosterone further stimulates the sebaceous glands, which produce twice as much sebum in men as in women. This is why men will have oily skin, larger pores and are more prone to symptoms of acne compared to women.
More pronounced wrinkles
Wrinkles appear later in men. But once visible, they quickly become deeper and more pronounced. The drop in testosterone is accompanied by muscle wasting which also accelerates sagging skin..
More sensitive skin…
Do you know that on average, a man shaves more than 20,000 times in his lifetime? Repetitive movements of the razor blade on the skin cause irritation, micro-cuts and sensitize the skin of the man.
…and predisposed to
And yes! Ingrown hairs are very common in men! Especially when shaving is done in the opposite direction of the hair growth or when the hair curls naturally. On regrowth, the hair sometimes rolls under the skin and causes a small red pimple which becomes painful when it becomes infected.
